The Tide is Coming

“This paddle carries the movement of the tides — not just in the ocean, but in the restoration of Sugpiaq identity.”

Wood Old-growth Yellow Cedar
Finish Traditional Seal Oil & Ochre
Length 62 in
Blade 5.5 in
Time Invested 142 hours
Price $1,500

Carved from a single piece of old-growth yellow cedar gathered on a winter beach near Kodiak, The Tide is Coming was shaped over 142 hours of hand work.

The thin red ochre line at the throat marks the meeting place of fresh and salt water — a reminder that every Sugpiaq paddle is first a relationship between a person, a tree, and a coastline.

Currently exhibited at the Alaska Native Heritage Center.
