Benjamin Jacuk

Benjamin Jacuk is an artist, woodcarver, and historical researcher dedicated to the preservation and continuation of Alaska Native material culture. Specializing in traditional Gulf of Alaska carving techniques, Ben’s work bridges the gap between ancestral knowledge and contemporary indigenous identity.

His signature handcrafted pieces, such as the large Sugpiaq paddle “The Tide is Coming,” reflect a deep mastery of form, function, and cultural storytelling. Each paddle and piece of material culture he builds is meticulously crafted to honor the traditions of his heritage while ensuring those techniques remain a living, breathing practice for future generations.

Beyond the carving bench, Ben serves as a vital voice in historical preservation, focusing his academic research on ancestral repatriation and documenting the complex histories of Alaska. His work celebrates the resilience of indigenous spirit and craft, giving new voice to ancient traditions.
